Anal stretching adventures: a butt plug comparison story

Anal stretching - B-Vibe Snug Plug

Words and pictures: Nisha Desai

As the boredom of endless lockdowns hit, and it seemed everyone was busy knitting a scarf or nurturing a sourdough starter, I decided it was time to explore anal play.

I tentatively began with the Satisfyer 3-Piece Butt Plug Set. The pretty pastel colours felt like an unintimidating place to begin, and at only £15 this kit isn’t too much of an investment if you’re unsure whether ass play is going to be your cuppa tea. The set comes with three plugs, each a different shape – you get two beaded style plugs in pink and a beautiful lilac spiral resembling a unicorn horn.

The shapes are what makes these toys really unique and exciting, giving the opportunity to play with different sensations and explore what feels good. The structures gradually increase in width, allowing for easy insertion. I found this particularly true for the spiral which slides in and out with ease, spinning in a pleasurable corkscrew-like motion. With a maximum diameter of 1.4" towards the toy base, these are a great choice for anal newbies, or anyone wanting to add variation to their plug collection (we all have one of those right?!).

Thanks to a ring-shaped handle, these plugs couldn’t be easier for you or a partner to remove, which is reassuring for anyone new to butt plugs. Although the ring sits nicely between your cheeks, it does mean these are less suited to prolonged wear as this may feel a little uncomfortable while sitting or wearing tight clothes. The silicone is super soft and smooth, yet another feature which makes these perfect beginner toys.

After lots of solo exploration I felt comfortable enough to add the Satisfyer plugs in to play with partners. While I find the flexibility of plugs makes them much more comfortable than those made from rigid materials such as glass or metal, the result is also that they are considerably lighter in weight. In my personal experience as someone with a vulva, I had issues with these lightweight silicone butt plugs popping out during PIV sex.

At this point I also felt ready to get a little braver with my booty toys. When it comes to anal training, the general rule is to size up once you’re able to take a toy without any discomfort. This isn’t a race and patience is key – enjoy experiencing all the new yummy sensations, rather than rushing to stick Self & More’s biggest anal toy up your bum (although we’ll get there eventually).

I next chose to purchase b-Vibe’s Snug Plug. This toy is available in 4 sizes, which makes it a perfect toy for anal training as you can start small and work your way up. As with the Satisfyer Set, the Snug Plug toys are made from a body safe seamless silicone. The smallest in the range is finger-sized, so I opted for the Snug Plug 2 which comes in 1 inch bigger at 4.3" long. The Snug Plug 2 is great size for beginners looking to progress on their journey toward more advanced anal play.

With a unique torpedo shape, the tapered end helps with insertion (although as always with anal play the key is lube, lube, and more lube – just make sure it’s water based for use with silicone toys). The Snug Plug was slightly trickier to insert than my typical bulb shaped plugs, however I also found it more comfortable once inside. The most exciting feature of the Snug Plug is the internal weighted balls, so it possesses all the comfort benefits of a silicone toy, while still delivering that full feeling which I go crazy for. Some reviewers claim that you can also feel the balls jiggling while the plug is inserted, although I can’t say I noticed this sensation.

The snug plug has been designed with extended wear in mind, which is another element that drew me to this toy. The curved T-shaped base is shaped in such a way that it fits comfortably while sitting, walking, or whatever else you choose to get up to. The stem is particularly thin at only 1cm in diameter, which allows the anal sphincter (the muscles around your butt hole entrance) to relax and close comfortably around it. During the pandemic I have found this plug fun to wear on socially distanced dates, or just to spice up the weekly Lidl shop. It is a nice and discrete toy, so your walking buddy needn’t know what you have up your bum unless you choose to tell them.

The Snug Plug toys come with a travel case (which will come in handy when holidays are once again a thing) and a ‘guide to anal play’. This cute little booklet contains the sex positive education you wish you’d got at school - topics include anal anatomy, anal hygiene, lubricant, clean up and bum protection. Even the user guide has instructions for inserting, making the most of and removing your snug plug – these educational elements are something which sets b-Vibe apart from many other toy manufacturers.

After all my anal education, and a bit more experience of penetrative anal sex, I was feeling brave and ordered the Snug Plug 4. Despite knowing it was 5.2" in length, I was a little taken aback by the size when I opened the box. It is also noticeably heavy at 257g, which was a nice surprise.

B-Vibe Snug Plug Size 2 and 4

My advice would be not to miss out Snug Plug 3, as there is a BIG jump up in size from 2 to 4 and this model is definitely for more advanced play. However, after lots of warming up I can say that it truly delivers on that satisfying full feeling. It has the same 1cm thick neck as Snug Plug 2 so is very comfortable once inserted, but due to the weight you don’t simply forget it’s there. Despite the stem remaining the same size, the flared base is larger on this model. As such I found it unsuitable for double penetration play as the base slightly covered my vulva, it was however wonderful to have in while playing with external stimulation. I also find using a vibrator externally a great way to help relax before taking anal toys, particularly when sizing up!
