Avoiding PornHub but don’t know where to go instead? Not a fan of mainstream porn? Then look no further than this list of ethical alternatives!

The Problem With PornHub

PornHub is the most recognisable and popular porn site in the world with an average of 42 billion visits per year. For a long time, it has presented itself as the funny and friendly face of pornography yet the reality behind the website is much darker than many realise.

Until December of 2020, PornHub allowed anyone to upload content to its site. Without a verification programme in place, videos of real sexual violence and abuse towards people including children could be found on the site. Through this liberal uploading system, PornHub has generated profit from video footage of real sexual violence and child pornography without consequence.

Victims have appealed to PornHub to have their videos taken down but many received little to no response until a New York Times report on the issue caused Visa and Mastercard to cut ties with the site (a move which could seriously harm the livelihoods of legitimate sex workers on the platform). This separation caused PornHub to spring into action with a policy change that now requires verification from users who intend to upload content, this was also followed up by the removal of millions of videos.

While these new measures from PornHub were necessary and important, it only happened because of the threat to their profits. Where was this action when victims spoke out? It’s too little too late from PornHub. It’s time consumers took their time and money to more ethical alternatives.

Support Individual Creators

You know that adult film star you really like? They most likely post content to a members-only site that you can subscribe to and support them directly!

As the internet has expanded and we’ve started to live more of our lives online, there has been an increase in the popularity of online sex work. Platforms such as ‘OnlyFans’, ‘ManyVids’, and ‘Just For Fans’ allow you to subscribe to and buy content from individual creators.

This option is fab because not only are you supporting sex workers in one of the most direct ways possible, it also allows you to connect with your favourite creators on a more personal level and you can have access to content that’s not available anywhere else! Many sex workers have a paid messaging function they use and are willing to make personalised content just for you (remember to remain respectful, sex workers are still doing a job just like me and you).

There’s such a wide variety of individual and partner creators out there that you’re bound to find some to float your boat!

Audio Porn

Perhaps you’re someone who doesn’t particularly enjoy the visual side of pornography or maybe you do but want to try something new out. Audio porn does exactly what it says on the tin, it’s porn but for your ears only. Just like video porn, there are a tonne of different types including stories, scenarios, sounds, and even sexy conversations!

Arguably, audio porn is one of the most ethical ways to consume porn alongside reading erotica.

If you like the idea of having someone read erotica to you then a subscription to a site such as ‘Dipsea’ or ‘Girl On The Net’ might be a good place to start your audio porn journey.

There are also platforms where creators post their audio porn clips just for the fun and love of it. Take a look at pages such as Pillow Talk Audio on Reddit for amateur audio submissions. Pages like that are a great option if you can’t afford to pay but want all the enjoyment without a guilty conscience.

There’s plenty out there so have a little browse around and see if audio porn is right for you.

Erotic Literature

This one is for all the book lovers and short story fanatics out there! For many people, watching others engage in sexual acts just isn’t a turn on but reading about them and getting their imagination involved really is.

There are thousands of erotica authors out there that create works of streamy fiction and even non-fiction for your reading pleasure. There’s erotica out there for everyone whether you’re into romance, danger, history, or maybe even horror!

Believe it or not, there are award-winning writers for this stuff so if you want to make sure you’re in good hands then check out talents such as Tabitha Rayne.

If you can’t resist the new book smell then you might want to buy an erotic fiction anthology of which there are many! Take a look at this list for a good place to get started.

For those of you who like something a little out of the ordinary, Berlinable is where you ought to be. An art collective based all around the world who write indie erotica... need I say more?

Much like audio porn, there are sites where people upload stories they have written for fun and that you can therefore read for free! Literotica is one of the most popular sites and has a vast range of categories so there’s bound to be something to your liking.

Ethical and Feminist Porn

Forgive me for stating the obvious here, but the majority of mainstream porn is centred around male pleasure. A lot of mainstream porn productions aren’t mindful of things like diversity, fair pay, friendly and safe environments for actors, or a genuine focus on female pleasure.

Watching porn shouldn’t come at the cost of your morality so perhaps it’s time to take the plunge into the world of ethical and feminist porn.

As I mentioned, diversity isn’t usually at the forefront of mainstream porn but that’s where sites like PinkLabel.Tv come into play! They pride themselves on the ethical production of content as well as a focus on genuine inclusion rather than fetishisation.

For those who want to see real (and I mean real) pleasure then check out ‘Make Love Not Porn’ - this popular site allows couples and individuals to upload their sexy home videos and get paid for it! If the lack of intimate moments, giggles, and genuine enjoyment in mainstream porn doesn’t do it for you, sites like these definitely will!

Top tip when looking for ethical porn: if you don’t have to pay for it, it’s probably not very ethical!
